Creating your first collection

In this video guide, we go through creating a collection that shows data about different countries.

To go along with the guide, you can download the example file and images used from here.

Collections without additional data #

If you only have a set of images you wish to view in Zegami, then you can simply omit uploading data when adding assets to your collection. Zegami will automatically infer metadata about your images and perform any image similarity clustering or machine learning that is enabled on your workspace.

Prepare your data #

If your collection has data then the first step is to prepare a data file that can be used as the basis of your collection.

Zegami supports flat files in Excel (.xlsx), Comma separated (.csv) or Tab separated (.tsv) format. The data simply needs to be arranged in rows and columns. The first row must contain the names for the columns and will be used by Zegami to refer to the column data.

It’s important to note that there must be a column in the data file that lists the names of the images files. In the example data file, the column is called ImageName and contains the names of each corresponding image. For example Flag_of_Australia.jpg.

Create your collection #

To get started navigate to your workspaces page and select the workspace you wish to create the collection within. Then click the “Build a new collection” card.

Select the type of collection you want to build, either Deepzoom or Dynamic. Choose a title for the collection and optionally a description and thumbnail.

Upload your assets #

The next step is to upload the images and data for your collection. Either drag and drop the files on the drop target or click the button to open a file browser.

Zegami will automatically infer which column references the filenames of your images, but it is possible to override it in the Join Summary. This section also reports information on any rows which were not matched to images (and vice versa).

The collection will take time to process depending on its size, and you will be informed of its progress as it goes.

Viewing the collection #

Once the collection has been created it is almost ready to be viewed, but first it must finish processing. You need not stay on the upload page, your collection will be accessible from the workspace page once it has completed.

When processing is complete, click the card to view the collection!
